The Katrina disaster revealed the basic insensitivity of the Bush administration to the plight of the poor, minorities and the disadvantaged. Granting tax breaks to the rich while dismantling the government's safety nets, the so-called "compassionate" conservatives hate big government enough to sacrifice the bottom of the society to their social experiments. NCLB is just one element in a broad plan to privatize everything from schooling to relief.

Sink or swim!

The folks in charge of the Ed Department are as well suited to lead this nation's schools as the political appointees who mismanaged the relief effort of Katrina.

While they talk a good game, they have few credentials and little skill in leading a reform effort.

They are ideologues committed to radical notions like privatization and charter schools.
